Transition in school is about managing the social and emotional aspects of transition, but it is also concerned with managing the continuity of learning, so that there is little, if any, impact on learning.

The transitions that occur during early childhood can be viewed as some of the most important ones that will occur in our lives. Learning to successfully transition is a key life skill which is applied not just to entering and moving through the education system but also entering and re-entering the world of work and relationships.  This skill not only helps us achieve academic and employment goals but can underpin our sense well-being and mental health.

Starting and changing schools are big transitions. There are transitions that occur in a child’s personal life and there are transitions that form part and parcel of the child’s life as a pupil in school. How do transitions affect children and how can you support the children in your school through these potentially difficult times?
